On December 24th, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed in Belgum to end the War of 1812. The total numbers of deaths were approximately 8,600 for the British and 11,300 for the Americans. Though many say that there was no clear winner of the war, the Americans gained no land from it, and that was a victory for Canadians and the British. The Native Americans were the clear losers, though the Unites States signed fifteen treaties giving land to the Native people, they ended up giving no land to them. Today, 202 years after the war, we still remember it, in school and with museums and historical sites accross Upper Canada. It's hard to imagine life in Canada today without the sacrifices that people made in the War of 1812.
